Fundraiser for Guitars not Guns at the Rio White Album Show

The White Album Ensemble Presents:
"Sgt. Pepper's Mystery Tour"!

Friday and Saturday, December 28th and 29th, 2007
Rio Theatre 1205 Soquel Avenue, Santa Cruz, CA

The 40th anniversary of Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band and Magical Mystery Tour albums (1967-2007).

The White Album Ensemble presents a special holiday show, in the "White Christmas" annual tradition, a return engagement of the live recreation of what Rolling Stone magazine called "the most important rock & roll album ever made, an unsurpassed adventure in concept, sound, songwriting, cover art and studio technology by the greatest rock & roll group of all time".

The Rio Theatre, with its newly improved sound system, will provide a stunning retro backdrop for the live performance of these albums, done to exact detail by a 16-piece "Rockestra", enhanced by a special era video accompaniment designed for the show by Mark Thornton.

“Sgt. Pepper’s” represented a quantum shift in pop music and culture, a break from the Beatlemania-hysteria-fueled touring machine. It was a sonic and artistic departure from what was expected, and an enormous risk. It rocketed straight to #1 and changed the course of pop music forever.

Though forty years have passed since Pepper's release- arguably nothing has come close to eclipsing this rare combination of artistic integrity and mass appeal. All-time Beatles record sales have been estimated by EMI as being over one billion discs, records and tapes to date.

1966 marked the end of the Beatles' touring days, and this intention becomes clear when one hears the innovative orchestration of "A Day In The Life", the exotic Indian classical treatment of "Within You, Without You" and the addition of many "outside" studio musicans to such classics as "Penny Lane" and "All You Need Is Love".

1967 also saw the release of Pepper’s companion piece- “Magical Mystery Tour”, which contained songs from the same sessions, “Strawberry Fields forever” and “I am the Walrus”. Though not as popular as “Pepper’s’” -it certainly is the perfect opening act.
The May, 2005, two night debut of the White Album Ensemble's "Sgt Pepper's Mystery Tour" sold out well in advance. Getting tickets early is recommended and 60's attire is highly encouraged!

White Album Ensemble has raised over $100,000 for Music in Schools programs, community based non-profits such as the Santa Cruz County Symphony, Guitars not Guns, Jazzmasters, Musicscool Scholarship Fund and Adopt-a-Minefield.

"This wonderful local group is the next best thing to hearing the Beatles perform these albums live (which they never did...)"— UCSC music professor Fred Lieberman

"…musically, they were tighter than a hangman's noose… an excellent performance…"— Metro Santa Cruz

“Many people felt they would enjoy the concert. But a common response in the wake of those shows was that people weren’t merely entertained, but transformed.”— Wallace Baine, Santa Cruz Sentinel
