SOS Children’s Village Welcomes Guitars Not Guns!
Florida State President, Val Steinberg, is pleased to announce that The SOS Children’s Village in Coconut Creek, Florida will be the installation site for our first Florida GNG chapter. The Village is a wonderful residential facility created to providing services to abused and neglected children located throughout South Florida. Services include emergency care and a temporary, loving home environment, as well as assisting with foster care options and adoptions. Please visit their website to learn more about this wonderful organization! Fifteen students will be given lessons and guitars and instructed by three very special volunteers. Additional volunteers for our Coconut Creek chapter include Gary Klein and Daniel Braff. We are lucky to have so many wonderful volunteer instructors and assistants to count on! Classes start this week and will culminate with a recital on November 30th.
Welcome Florida State Vice President, Kenneth Arfa!
Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, Ken has been playing guitar since he was a youngster. When he was in high school, his band was signed with Scope Records, a subsidiary of Motown Records. Though the band never made it to the big time, Ken kept up with his music by teaching group guitar programs at summer camps and individual students. Ken has extensive knowledge of other instruments as well, as the prior owner of a music store, which he later sold to Guitar Center. Ken’s younger daughter is also an accomplished musician and solo performing artist with several CD credits of her own. Ken enjoys working with kids, having been a mentor, as well as a “Big Brother” with his match for over 10 years. We are lucky to have him on board!
Volunteers are still needed to be teachers and assistant teachers at other chapter facilities located throughout the state of Florida in all counties. Retirees, seniors, musicians - everyone is welcome to apply to volunteer! All you need is the desire to work with children, patience, love, and a passion to contribute to the community - we’ll do the rest! We also need donations of guitars, music supplies, printing (for instruction books), along with other volunteer services. Please contact Val or Ken today!
