The Santa Clara and San Mateo County chapters of GNG recently concluded a joint collaboration class atAlta Vista High School in Mountain View, CA.  Bob Megantz and John Allured teamed with AVHS faculty member Michael Ahern to  conduct a Level I class with nine students, all of whom graduated with flying colors.  Congratulations to these young guitarists!

High Risk Young Men Helped

October 10, 2009 .....The San Mateo chapter completed a Level I class held at Camp Glenwood, which serves high-risk young men who are facing extended detention in Juvenile Hall or who would have been sentenced to long-term incarceration in a secure California Youth Authority facility.  The class was arranged with the assistance of the Honorable Marta S. Diaz, Supervising Judge of the Juvenile Court, San Mateo County Superior Court.  There thirteen students, and all graduated.  In fact, the scores on the written test were among the highest in the history of the San Mateo County chapter.  In addition to learning the basics of guitar, the class worked on songs by Santana and Chuck Berry.  Chris Quinn, Jude Damasco, and John Allured co-taught the class.

Hi all,
Just a note to let you know we're up and running in San Mateo County.  In our first class we had 10 kids, mostly 3rd-5th graders.  Most have played some type of musical instrument, and two even had their own guitars.  They were quite knowledgeable for a beginning class, asking about barre chords, sharps and flats,
"whether Fenders are good guitars," and if they could give their guitars nick names.  In fact, they asked a LOT of questions, and almost every child was participating.  That, coupled with the fact that they were very well behaved, makes me confident that we will be able to make a lot of progress with them.  The room at the Police ActivitiesLeague facility is perfect, with a large blackboard and even a TV with VCR/DVD player, so maybe we'll be able to play short video clips(of people like Tony Rice/Robben Ford or the like) while we're setting up each week.  Jude Damasco, Brian Fukuji and I all had fun the first week, and I'm sure the good vibes will continue from week to week.
  Regards,
   John
