| CONGRATULATIONS
CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATE LEVEL I AND II
The San Francisco Chapter added six new guitar players to the jammin’ GNG kidz’ roster, and advanced another half dozen to the upcoming Level III class (our very first) beginning in January, 2007 ! After a warm welcome and introduction by state Board member and chapter president, Val Steinberg, the Level I and Level II students performed separate recital selections, led by instructors Tim Hall and Val Steinberg (filling in for instructor Carter Townsend). Students were then presented with their Certificates of Achievement, along with a very special GNG chocolate bar.
Before concluding and enjoying a yummy reception, Val Steinberg presented her President’s Awards, one each to a Level I student and a Level II student. The President’s Award is given to one student in each class that has demonstrated a dedication to learning the craft by caring for their instrument and making a diligent effort to learn to play – not necessarily the student who has exhibited the most skill or talent. The Level I award was presented to Ivania Molina who received an electric tuner and a necklace made from an autographed John Lennon guitar pick. Level II award winner Ellande Tang received the latest version of “The Guitar Bible”.

Special thanks to the volunteers that make our program possible in San Francisco – Carter Townsend, our Vice President and Instructor, and Tim Hall, Instructor. Thanks also to all the family and friends who attended and contributed to the wonderful selection of goodies at the reception, and a very special thanks to the staff at the Excelsior Youth Club for the continued use of their facilities and staff assistance. We also would like to acknowledge our sister program, Music in Schools Today, where many of our students learn about our program. We’re all looking forward to ther 2007 session starting in January. Happy holidays to everyone! |

-About Val Steinberg |
I began studying classical guitar at Charlie Byrd
Studios in Bethesda, Maryland. After two years there,
I studied withSophocles Pappas in Washington, D.C.
I began teaching classical guitar and piano when
I was in high school in order to save money for
college. I used my basic classical training to compose
folk music and was rather important on the folk
circuit in the DC area for a number of years.
I have had several bands of my own through the
years, and play primarily electric rhythm guitar
now.....country, blues and rock....but I still play
the occasional classical piece to amuse myself
at home. I also play piano and have taught piano
for many years, as well as voice and theory.
I love working with children, and have been
involved with Big Brothers/Big Sisters for for almost
thirty years. I love kids, and I love to teach,

Hi all,
Val's News..... Sorry I haven't had a chance to write you before now, but I wanted first of all to thank John and Carter for teaching on Tuesday, and to thank Darren and Andrea for all your help in setting up the perfect classroom for us. Honestly, we didn't know what to expect, but we were very excited about getting things rolling. We were thrilled with the turnout, even though there were only six students to start with. For the the first lesson, between setting up guitars and explaining the basic concepts of the class, it was probably a good thing that there were only six. Andrea believes that there may be more showing up next week....we'll see!
They're smart and eager, and hoisted those gig bags on their backs with great determination as they left. We can't wait . Thanks again, everyone, for all your help in getting the program going in the Excelsior. I'll try to remember to bring my camera with me next week too. By the way, ABSOLON is the band If you'd like me to add you to my band's mailing list, let me know. We play all over the bay area.
